Being the target of bullies early in childhood his father taught him basic fighting skills and his older cousin trained him in various martial arts. After the death of his father, he helped support his family by participating in street fights, pit fights, and most recent joining first Carnage City Wrestling and the RWF. After the RWF went out of business he was approached by Vince McMahon with a contract to join the WWE.
